Gaza War Protests Threaten Graduation Ceremonies: Universities on Alert

The upcoming graduation season in the US may witness a new chapter unfolding in campus protests as universities brace themselves for potential disruptions during commencement ceremonies. Four universities recently rocked by pro-Palestinian demonstrations are set to hold graduations this weekend, while others, like Columbia University, have ceremonies scheduled throughout May and June.

Universities are ramping security measures as protesters contemplate various actions, including walkouts. Recent protests demanding universities sever ties with Israel over the Gaza conflict have led to confrontations with police and numerous arrests across nearly 140 institutions in 45 states and Washington DC.

While student protesters have mostly remained silent about disruption plans for graduations, groups like IU Divest and the Palestine Solidarity Committee at Indiana University have called for a walkout during commencement events. They urge participants to express solidarity by wearing keffiyehs alongside their graduation attire.

At Indiana University, the proposed walkout coincides with concerns regarding academic freedom, exemplified by a recent no-confidence vote against the university president over issues related to Palestinian advocacy on campus.

Similar sentiments are echoed at other universities, such as the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and the University of Connecticut. Recent protests have prompted university officials to prepare designated protest areas and enforce regulations to prevent disruptions.

While some student activists declined to comment on disruption plans, Palestinian international student Mahmoud Khalil from Columbia University emphasized the protest movement’s resilience despite disciplinary actions and police interventions. However, protesters at Columbia did not respond to inquiries regarding potential disruptions during graduation ceremonies.

The impending graduation season poses a unique challenge for universities grappling with balancing the right to free speech and maintaining order during significant events. As tensions persist, how universities navigate these challenges will be closely observed amid ongoing advocacy efforts on campus.
