On Wednesday, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne postponed plans for a new immigration law until September due to a lack of parliamentary support.

After months of mass protests, the minority administration utilized extraordinary constitutional powers to pass a severely unpopular pension bill without a vote.

“Now is not the time to start a debate over a bill that could divide the French,” Borne said at a press conference.

She claimed she had failed to negotiate a compromise with the conservative Les Republicains (LR) party on the immigration measure, which aims to speed up the deportation of illegal migrants and simplify residency cards for employees in hard-to-fill industries.

The administration expected to introduce the law to both chambers in April. However, bear promised to keep lobbying for the law.
