Forrest Gump Star Gary Sinise’s Son Mac, 33, Remembered
Forrest Gump star Gary Sinise has announced the passing of his 33-year-old son, Mac Sinise, who battled a “very rare cancer” known as Chordoma. The US actor shared the heartbreaking news on the Gary Sinise Foundation website, revealing that Mac succumbed to the illness on January 5, more than five years after being diagnosed.
In the statement, Sinise expressed the family’s deep sorrow, stating they are “heartbroken” but are managing as best they can. He felt “blessed, fortunate, and proud” to be Mac’s father. Mac, whose full name was McCanna Anthony Sinise, graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music and was notably recognized for his drumming skills.
Mac’s battle with Chordoma began in August 2018, just two months after his mother, Moira, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. While Moira went into remission and remained cancer-free, Mac’s condition deteriorated as the rare cancer spread, gradually disabling him.
As a parent, Sinise acknowledged the immense difficulty of losing a child, extending his sympathy to others who have experienced a similar loss. The family’s cancer fight lasted for over five years, becoming increasingly challenging over time. Sinise, known for his role as Lieutenant Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump, expressed the family’s heartache at Mac’s absence but found comfort in knowing he was no longer suffering.
Mac’s resilience and determination were highlighted by Sinise, who described his son as “an incredible inspiration” who faced the uphill battle with grace, courage, and love. Despite setbacks, Mac continued living, learning, creating, giving, and loving.
Chordoma, a rare cancer originating in the spine, affects approximately 300 people in the US each year. Sinise emphasized the challenges of this “one in a million” cancer and shared his son’s inspirational journey. The announcement prompts reflections on the impact of rare diseases and the strength exhibited by individuals and families facing such health challenges.
