Florida Plane Crash Kills Georgia Man and Injures Daughter

A small plane crash-landed on a Florida beach Sunday, July 27, killing a Georgia man and injuring his 9-year-old daughter.

CNN reported that Ommy Irizarry, 36, and his daughter Oceana, 9, were hit by the crashed aircraft late afternoon. Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Wendy Rose said the Venice airport got a distress call from the pilot.

“They were contacted by a pilot whose small plane was in distress. He knew he couldn’t make it back to the airport and was going to try to land on the beach. And he did land at the edge of the water on the beach,” Rose said.

According to Fox News, Rose said the pilot and the only passenger were not hurt when the plane lost power and crashed on the beach, where the father and daughter were walking.

Rose said Irizarry died on the scene, and the child was sent to a children’s hospital without injury details released.

“We don’t know exactly what caused the crash but the NTSB [National Transportation Safety Board] is en route and will investigate,” Rose said.
