Floods and snow hit Northwest Europe after the latest Atlantic storm. On Wednesday, parts of northwest Europe struggled to cope with the latest Atlantic storms that dropped rain or snow on wet terrain, while northern Scandinavia faced severe cold.
Rescue teams in northern France assisted in evacuating inhabitants from swamped homes in the town of Arques in the Pas de Calais department, which had flooded for the second time in two months due to severe rains.
Another 20–40 mm (0.85–1.7 inches) of rain was forecast over the next several hours, and a red signal suggested that the river Aa was on the verge of overflowing.
“The first time, you think it’s luck, but the second time, it starts to hit your morale and your wallet,” Arques homeowner Anthony Richevin explained as he was evacuated. “You start wondering about the future.”
For the time being, no large-scale evacuations are planned in the region, according to Van Cauter.
A boat carrying roughly 900 people from Norway to Denmark could not dock in Copenhagen due to the storm and was waiting for the wind to die down, which may not happen until early Thursday, according to shipping operator DFDS.
Following severe snowfall, the southern town of Kristiansand in Norway announced the closure of its schools and the cancellation of all public transportation.

According to the Swedish Met Office, the Arctic town of Kvikkjokk reported an overnight temperature of -43.6 Celsius (-46.5 Fahrenheit), Sweden’s lowest for January in 25 years.
A lady went lost in a blizzard while out skiing in Lapland, northern Finland, on Tuesday and was subsequently found dead in an avalanche. The hunt for her kid was still ongoing on Wednesday, according to Finnish police.
