On Friday, Jun. 20, a young American in Tübingen, Germany was rescued from a giant sculpture of a vagina, weighing 32 tons. Rescuing this student took 22 firefighters. Local newspaper Schwaebisches Tagblatt joked, “forceps delivery was not necessary.” The firefighters explained that they freed the man “by hand and without the application of tools after about 30 minutes.”
The artwork by Peruvian artist Fernando de la Jara, entitled the “Chacán-Pi” (Making Love) has remained outside of Tübingen University’s institute for microbiology and virology since 2001. It is worth almost $200 thousand. Nevertheless, this is the first time that a student decided to actually venture inside the sculpture. Fire department squad leader Markus Mozer told NBC News that, “It was a dare. The young man had tried to pose for an unusual photo and climbed into the artwork.”
The sculpture is made out of red Veronese marble. According to the artist, the sculpture is meant to represent, “the gateway to the world.” The mayor of Tübingen discussed the incident with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, saying, “even when considering the most extreme adolescent fantasies. To reward such a masterly achievement with the use of 22 firefighters almost pains my soul.” The 20-year old, American exchange student who got caught in the six foot tall sculpture chooses to keep his identity anonymous.
