Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fiji First’s general secretary and former attorney general, was detained on Monday for abuse of office, according to local media.
After an election official complained, the Director of Public Prosecution accepted the criminal case, FBC News reported.
Outside office hours, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions did not respond to Reuters.
Fijian media reported that Sayed-Khaiyum will appear in Suva Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Fiji First’s Facebook page showed police taking Sayed-Khaiyum. Fiji First ignored.
In March, Frank Bainimarama, Fiji’s ex-prime minister, denied abuse of office accusations.
Bainimarama dominated the Pacific island nation for 16 years until a coalition led by current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka almost beat him in December.
