EU to ask China at UN to push Russia towards ‘just peace‘ in Ukraine. According to a draft of his speech that Reuters saw at the UNGA, European Council President Charles Michel will ask China directly at the United Nations Security Council to do more to push Russia towards a “just peace” in Ukraine. This request will be made in the United Nations Security Council context.
At the Security Council meeting on Wednesday at the annual high-level United Nations General Assembly in New York, Michel will plea for “a just peace that respects the U.N. Charter and its core principles — the territorial integrity of a sovereign nation.”
According to the proposal, Michel will directly address the Chinese delegation and say, “As responsible nations, let’s join forces – to persuade Russia to end this criminal war that is hurting so many.”
Vice President Han Zheng of China is now in New York for the annual gathering of world leaders for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). According to diplomats, Vice President Han Zheng will likely attend the meeting of China’s 15-member council while he is here.
Additionally, it is anticipated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will be present at the council meeting.
The 193-member United Nations General Assembly has requested that Moscow withdraw its soldiers from Ukraine and stop the violence, but China has chosen to abstain from the votes on the resolution. In February of 2022, Russia launched an invasion of its neighboring country.
It seemed China was trying to maintain a neutral diplomatic stance regarding the conflict in Ukraine by abstaining from voting on the resolutions. Beijing has stated that all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity must be maintained, but it believes that all security concerns should be addressed. This is a gesture to Russia’s anxiety about NATO.
