On Tuesday, top U.S. and EU officials meet in Sweden to discuss China, artificial intelligence, future technologies, and EU complaints over Trump-era tariffs and green subsidies.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager will attend the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) fourth ministerial meeting in Lulea, just below the Arctic Circle.
Gina Raimondo, Katherine Tai, and Valdis Dombrovskis will also attend.

A 24-page draft joint statement includes cooperation on creating minimum criteria for generative AI algorithms like ChatGPT, export limits, and investment monitoring focused on Russia.

Even though the draft joint statement only mentions “China” twice—on non-market practices and disinformation—China will be a big topic.
It also wants progress on a “green steel” arrangement to reduce overcapacity by October to avoid the reinstatement of steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2021.
