As China prepares for high summer heat, EU climate director Frans Timmermans called for faster and more decisive collaborative action with China to address the “accelerating” climate problem.
On Tuesday, Timmermans, in Beijing for climate talks, met with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang in the Diaoyutai official guest house, where China’s leaders regularly welcome top foreign guests.
Timmermans described a “triple crisis” of global warming, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Crisis intensifies. Timmermans told Ding that coordinated action between China and the EU might motivate global action to control them.
Ding said China-EU cooperation has traditionally prioritized climate and ecology. He urged high-level conversations to improve collaboration.
China should peak its carbon emissions faster, Timmermans said on Monday.
“China is still building additional coal power capacities, substantial ones, which are, I think we can agree on that, the dirtiest way to generate electricity,” he said in a lecture at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, according to the EU.
China will eliminate coal use in 2026.
As more cities heat up this summer, Chinese officials on Monday urged power plants and coal suppliers to do “everything possible” to deliver electricity.
