EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell warned that Europe would not trust China if it did not diplomatically address the Ukraine issue.
COVID-19 prevented Borrell from speaking at a Beijing think tank on Friday. Instead, the EU posted his prepared remarks online.
“It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the European Union to maintain a relationship of trust with China, which I would like to see, if China does not contribute to the search for a political solution based on Russia’s withdrawal from the Ukrainian territory,” Borrell said.
“Neutrality in the face of the violation of international law is not credible,” Borrell said, pushing Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and provide additional humanitarian relief.
Since Russia’s “special military operation” invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Xi has visited Putin twice but not Zelenskiy.
