Erdogan asks Musk to build a Tesla factory in Turkey. On Monday, Anadolu Agency reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had personally asked Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk to establish a Tesla factory in Turkey.
According to Turkey’s official news agency, Erdogan posed this question to Musk during their meeting at the Turkish House building in New York City, which is located near the United Nations.
On the same day that Musk is in California, he is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Musk announced on X that the topic of discussion would be AI developments.
To participate in the 78th United Nations General Assembly session, Erdogan is now in the United States. Requests for comment sent to Tesla and the Turkish Embassy in Washington were not immediately met with a response.
In August, Tesla announced it was considering establishing a manufacturing facility in India to develop an affordable electric car (EV). Adding a seventh assembly plant in northern Mexico’s Nuevo Leon state is part of Tesla’s plan to become a more globally dominant electric vehicle manufacturer.
Musk predicted in May that a decision on where to build a new facility would be made before the end of the year.
The manufacturer announced on Saturday that it has manufactured its five millionth vehicle, and its stock is up 123% this year.
In addition to becoming the CEO of Tesla, Musk spent $44 billion in 2022 to acquire X (then known as Twitter).
Musk, who calls himself an “absolute free speech absolutist,” has given in to some censorship demands from the Turkish government. The social media giant has contested court orders in Turkey on several occasions.
