In the age of technology there are perhaps too many ways to communicate. Emoticons have become an especially popular way to convey emotions via technology. Now, the use of these symbols can actually be psychoanalyzed.
Apparently Daniel Brill, a copywriter for Droga5, has become the “Emoji doctor.” If a person screenshots his or her recently used emoticon, Brill will psychoanalyze this usage, determining the individual’s mental state. This is also dependent upon the emoticons that have been regularly applied while texting. In addition, he will “prescribe” a new emoticon to use after analysis. Brill’s venture is documented on his blog called, “Emojinalysis.”
Brill discussed his inspiration with Mashable, saying, “I was texting with a friend and pulled up my own recently used emojis and got a bit worried. It was a bunch of distressed faces, booze and exploding things, and I wondered, ‘Am I OK?'”
On his personal favorite emoticons, Brill said,”I think the Ghost is impressively versatile, and of course the Clinking Beer Mugs say a thousand words.” Adding, “The Blowfish is highly underrated. And I’m always intrigued, and slightly creeped out, when somebody uses the Love Hotel.”
Brill has created many, similarly fun, projects. For instance he created “Not Walter Frazier” which was a mock Twitter account used to make fun of Frazier. Brill also made “New Yeezy Resolutions”, a site which posts fake new year resolutions based off of Kanye West quotes.
Brill joked about his qualifications telling Mashable, “I have absolutely no experience in psychoanalysis — I’m not even sure I took PSYCH101 in college — so I’ve really got no right doing this. Which makes it way more fun.” So the analyses should probably be taken fairly lightly.
