Elon Musk calls for the U.S. government to delete entire agencies: ‘Remove the roots of the weed’

At the 2025 World Governments Summit, Elon Musk advocated for eliminating U.S. government agencies to curb bureaucracy. As head of the Department of Government Efficiency, he began by defunding USAID. His reforms aim to cut $1 trillion from the federal deficit, sparking both support and controversy over potential consequences.

Elon Musk Pushes for U.S. Government Agency Eliminations at Dubai Summit

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, made headlines at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on February 13, 2025. Speaking with Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence, Musk advocated for eliminating entire U.S. government agencies rather than simply downsizing them. He argued that bureaucracy tends to regenerate unless completely removed, comparing it to a weed that grows back if its roots are not entirely pulled out.

Musk’s proposal focuses on streamlining government operations and cutting waste. He claims that such reforms could reduce the federal deficit by $1 trillion by 2026, a figure that has sparked both interest and controversy. His remarks align with a broader movement toward reducing government oversight and inefficiency, an agenda championed by the current administration.

Musk’s influence in government policy has surged following his recent appointment as a special government employee. President Donald Trump selected him to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This department is tasked with identifying areas of excessive spending and restructuring federal agencies for optimal performance.

Unlike traditional government officials, Musk brings his entrepreneurial mindset to the table. Known for his ambitious approach to business and technological innovation, he has already begun taking bold steps in his new role. One of the first major actions under his leadership is the defunding and dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID, responsible for international development and humanitarian aid, has had its funding frozen, with most of its staff placed on furlough. Musk has proposed transferring the agency’s remaining functions to the State Department, a move that still requires congressional approval. Supporters argue that this restructuring will reduce redundancy and improve efficiency, while critics warn that dissolving USAID could weaken U.S. influence abroad and diminish vital humanitarian efforts.

Musk’s aggressive approach to government downsizing aligns with the administration’s long-term goals but raises questions about sustainability. His belief that bureaucracy inevitably regrows suggests that these eliminations are intended to create a fundamentally leaner government. However, whether such a strategy will succeed without unintended consequences remains a major topic of debate.

As discussions continue in Washington, it is clear that Musk’s involvement marks a significant shift in how the federal government operates. His unconventional leadership style, combined with his willingness to push for radical reforms, ensures that government restructuring will remain a pressing issue in the coming months.
