The Justice Department accused Republican U.S. Representative George Santos of fraud, money laundering, and public funds on Wednesday.
He was scheduled to appear in New York federal court later.
After CNN published the accusations, Santos’ attorney and congressional office did not reply to Reuters’ requests for comment late Tuesday.
Santos told an Associated Press reporter Tuesday: “This is news to me. You called first about this.”
The New York Times and other media sources reported that 34-year-old Santos had invented practically all of his personal and professional past shortly after his November victory in a rich Long Island district.
Santos claimed to have degrees from New York University and Baruch College, even though neither school had ever heard of him. In addition, he lied about working at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.
He lied about being Jewish and his grandparents escaping the Nazis. In addition, Santos, who is gay, did not disclose that he was married to a woman for several years until 2019.
He confesses to falsifying most of his résumé.
