Disney Goes After Clash of Clans With New Star Wars Game

Move over Clash of Clans, the almighty Star Wars brand is ready to throw its hat into the arena. As Clash of Clans showed how lucrative mobile base-building games can be, a slew of pursuers are excited on cashing in on the latest fad. Star Wars: Commander was released today for the iPhone and iPad and the game is slated to be released on other platforms in the future. The game is a joint effort between LucasFilms and Disney.

The game follows the classic format of players constructing bases while trying to conquer their opponent’s base. It is free to download and play, but in-app purchases are designed to improve in game progress. Players who choose to pass on investing monetarily in the game may find themselves unable to compete with those who do.

The fun of the game though comes not from the basic gaming format, but the fact that players get to use TIE Fighters, Stormtroopers and AT-ATs to wreak havoc on their enemies. In addition, players can choose from characters such as Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader as well as others. Disney Interactive’s executive producer and vice president of operations, Nathan Etter explained, as reported by The Guardian,

“We thought about what the core tenets of Star Wars are: the really cool things that we want to bring to life and let players experience. And here, that’s experiencing what it’s like to be a battlefield commander on either the Empire or Rebel side.”

The game starts at the beginning of episode IV and players start out as independent before the must choose which path they are going to follow. The story then progresses through episodes V and VI. And even though the game is chock full of fantastic details, developers insist that there is still more to come. Players can even unlock weapons and vehicles from previous Star Wars era such as the Clone Wars.

Still the app needs to watch how “Freemium” it gets. If users find that the quality of the game is impacted to greatly by the need to pay for upgrades, it could have a negative effect. Hopefully that won’t be the case. The story line and attention to detail sound amazing. It would be sad if greed crippled what could be Star War’s next smash hit.
