This year, Disney the global entertainment powerhouse, has the chance to break the record they made in 2016. That year, their films earned a total of $7.6 billion worldwide, and this year, they are on their way to surpass that with $9 billion.
Cowen analyst Doug Creutz said: “I would say they should finish pretty substantially above where they finished last year. I think it’s going to be above eight [billion dollars], it might be above nine.”
Since May, Disney has earned over $4 billion worldwide, according to Comscore’s data. Their closest competitor, Warner Bros., has earned $702 million domestically so far – roughly half of which came from Aquaman, released in December 2018.
Disney has already had a massively successful 2019 – Captain Marvel earned $1.2 billion, and Avengers: Endgame is currently at $2.714 billion, and could very well even overtake Avatar, which was the highest grossing film to date. But Disney still has many more potentially blockbusting films to come – Toy Story 4 opens next week, with the live-action remake of The Lion King, Frozen 2, and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker to follow.
Just 13 films have ever broken $500 million or more at the domestic box office, and nine of those were produced by Disney.
Morningstar analyst Neil Macker believes that Toy Story 4 is going to make approximately the same amount of money The Incredibles 2 did, and that the Lion King remake could make more than $2 billion globally.
