This year’s Disney films has earned the studio’s biggest global box office revenues ever. Quite a feat for a company that has such a long history.
The Hollywood studio has earned over 5.85 billion dollars in their global ticket sales from the beginning of this year to November 1st. Last year Disney cashed in $5.84 billion dollars from their global box office revenues. The studio expects to receive more profits this coming week with Doctor Strange premiering this Friday. Disney’s Star Wars: Rogue One and Moana’s theatrical release also guarantees a rise in their yearly profits.
This goes against the fact that Disney has yet to set a new industry record for annual box office profits. The number one spot for the top theatrical profits ever goes to Universal, who earned over $6.89 billion dollars in 2015. The films that have set Universal’s top record-breaking spot was Jurassic World and Furious 7.
Not every film Disney has created and released in theaters has been successful this year. The studio’s costly sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass was created on a $170 million budget. The film only earned $299.3 million dollars, which made the Alice in Wonderland sequel a flop for Disney.
Disney’s The Finest Hours and The BFG were total flops at multiplexes all over the United States. Reportedly the studio lost tens of millions of dollars from the two unprofitable 2016 films.
Alan Horn, Walt Disney Studio Chairman, commented that for the second year in a row the studio has reached a new high at the box office. Horn also stated that the studio’s success was due to successful releases from Disney, Disney Animation, Marvel, LucasFilm, and Pixar.
The chairman also stated that this success is a testament to the refined talent and innovative work from the entire production team. Horn stated that their work has created these successful world-class cinematic masterpieces.
Reportedly, Disney’s results in the box office can be attributed to Disney’s Chief Bob Iger. Since 2005, Iger has lead the initiative to purchase Pixar for $7.4 billion dollars, LucasFilm for $4 billion dollars, and Marvel for $4 billion dollars. Without these acquisitions, Disney wouldn’t have created Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, and Finding Dory, which have attributed to Disney’s biggest box office revenues this year.
