Death toll from Turkey-Syria earthquake passed 20,000 on Thursday.

Hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria were gripped by cold, hunger, and despair.

The rescue of a 2-year-old boy and several other people after 79 hours trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in Hatay, Turkey, lifted spirits among weary search crews.

However, hopes that many more would be discovered alive in the ruins of towns and cities were fading.

The death toll in both countries has now exceeded the 17,000 killed in 1999 .

When a similar powerful earthquake struck northwest Turkey.

According to a Turkish official, the disaster poses “very serious challenges” for the May 14 election.

Where President Tayyip Erdogan is expected to face his toughest challenge in two decades in power.

With anger simmering over delays in delivering aid and mobilizing rescue efforts.

The disaster is likely to factor into the vote if it goes ahead.
