A Chinese businessman treated homeless people to lunch at a Central Park restaurant on June 26, but the meal ended up angering them.
Chen Guangbiao, a Chinese tycoon, treated more than 200 homeless people from the New York City Rescue Mission to the Loeb Boathouse Restaurant with sesame-seed-encrusted tuna, beef filet and berries with cream fraiche, according to Time.
Chen was not only paying for the lunch, but he also sang “We Are the World” and performed a few magic tricks.
Chen also promised he would give each person $300 cash if they came, stating in the lunch ads that he posted in New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Homeless people were angry at Chen because he did not keep his promise. The shelter explained Chen would donate $300 cash to the organization for each person who came.
Chen treated homeless people to lunch and donated money because he wanted ”to stimulate people here and around the world to help poor people,” according to the New York Post.
Chen’s other goal of the trip was to break the image of rich Chinese individuals only spending money on luxuries.
Chen stood on the street, giving out $100 bills to New Yorkers on Tuesday, July 1, but was warned by shelter officials to stop.
Shelter officers said many homeless people are being treated for problems like drugs, and the cash could cause an opposite consequence as what Chen intended to achieve.
