The Wall Street Journal reported that the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the U.S. early this year used American technology to capture audio-visual data.
The WSJ reported that various U.S. defense and intelligence organizations found that the balloon carried commercially available U.S. hardware plus Chinese sensors and other equipment to collect photos, video, and other data for China.
The study concluded that the craft was designed for eavesdropping, not weather observation as China stated.
WSJ reported that the balloon did not appear to relay data from its eight-day flight across Alaska, Canada, and some contiguous U.S. states to China.
The White House or FBI did not immediately answer a request for comment.
In February, the U.S. shot down the balloon, which had flown over vital military locations.
