China’s Commerce Minister visits the US for an APEC meeting and meeting. Wang Wentao, China’s Minister of Commerce, will meet Gina Raimondo on Thursday after attending the 2023 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in the U.S.
“The Chinese side will exchange views on China-U.S. relations and issues of common concern,” said Shu Jueting, Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson, at a routine press conference in Beijing.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, Wang Wentao met with Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Dow, Merck, and Honeywell in Shanghai on Monday and told them, “China will continue to welcome U.S.-funded enterprises to develop in China and achieve win-win results.”
China banned Micron from selling memory chips to vital domestic businesses on Sunday, calling the company a national security danger.
The restriction followed Chinese raids on American consultants.
After G7 leaders met in Hiroshima, U.S. President Joe Biden, and other G7 leaders criticized China for “economic coercion” and said they would “de-risk” without “decoupling” from the world’s second-largest economy in chips and minerals. Wang Wentao’s trip to the U.S. follows.
Shu Jueting told reporters, “China hopes the G7 will not abuse trade and investment restrictions while saying they will not seek to decouple from the country.”
Wang Wentao met U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns in Beijing earlier this month, potentially paving the way for a visit from top U.S. officials after Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a February trip after the U.S. shot down a Chinese spy balloon over sensitive military sites.
Raimondo, Blinken, and Yellen want to visit China.
