In an interview released on Monday, China’s EU envoy reassured Ukraine’s neutrality by saying that China’s collaboration with Europe and other nations is “endless” and that its connections with Russia are “unlimited.”
The Paper interviewed the Chinese ambassador to the EU, Fu Cong, at an unknown time.
However, China’s ambassador to France questioned the sovereignty of former Soviet Union states like Ukraine in a Friday French television interview.
EU diplomats had criticized China for refusing to name Russia’s war on Ukraine an invasion or demand for its withdrawal, stressing that Beijing and Moscow established a “no limits” alliance just days before Russian forces invaded Ukraine.
“The European side should correctly understand the reference to ‘no upper limit,'” Fu told the publication. “Friendship and collaboration between nations should never be limited. China-Russia cooperation is “unlimited,” and so is China-Europe cooperation.
Fu rejected claims that China had “prior knowledge” of the Ukraine conflict or supplied weaponry, warning against “attempts” to use Sino-Russian relations to divide China and Europe.
Last month, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned it would be “extremely difficult” for the EU to trust China if China doesn’t help find a political solution based on Russia’s exit from Ukraine.
Borrell stated earlier this month, “Neutrality in the face of the violation of international law is not credible.”
Europe has also criticized China’s navy and air force drills in the Taiwan Strait and around democratic Taiwan, which China claims.
Borrell urged European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait in a Sunday Le Journal Du Dimanche editorial piece.
