China supports Myanmar’s sovereignty. On Wednesday, China’s foreign ministry said it supports Myanmar’s development and wants the world to respect its sovereignty and help it achieve peace and reconciliation.
Western nations avoided Myanmar after its military ousted an elected government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2001 and repressed national pro-democracy rallies.
On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang visited junta head Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyitaw.
“China supports Myanmar in exploring a development path with Myanmar characteristics that suits its national conditions,” Qin’s ministry quoted him as saying in discussions.
Qin said China supports Myanmar “advancing its political transition process and backs relevant parties… to properly address differences and seek national reconciliation under the constitutional and legal framework”.
He urged the international community should respect Myanmar’s sovereignty and assist in peace and reconciliation.
Since the coup, pro-democracy activists and ethnic minority forces fighting for self-determination have fought the well-equipped army in Myanmar.
Myanmar’s Southeast Asian neighbors’ negotiation attempts have failed.
China buys Myanmar’s jade, tin, and lumber and sometimes takes in refugees from insurgent-government warfare.
Qin said China would boost China-Myanmar Economic Corridor investment and construct agriculture, education, and health care projects.
The Chinese foreign minister also backed Myanmar’s connections with Bangladesh. MRTV reported energy and border trade talks.
