According to a Chinese foreign ministry statement, Foreign Minister Qin Gang called U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday to urge him to avoid meddling in China’s affairs.
The high-profile talk precedes Washington’s top diplomat’s reported visit to Beijing to defuse tensions over spy claims and a semiconductor dispute.
Qin hoped the U.S. could meet China halfway, have reasonable disagreements, and foster dialogue and collaboration in the call.
Qin said the U.S. should respect China’s basic issues like Taiwan. He wanted to stabilize Sino-U.S. relations and get them back on track.
Last Friday, a U.S. official claimed Blinken would visit Beijing on June 18, but the Chinese foreign ministry has not provided details.
Blinken canceled the first U.S. secretary of state travel to Beijing in five years in February due to a suspected Chinese spy balloon above the U.S.
