China’s Toronto consulate-general said on Thursday that an allegation of consular employees “coercing” a Canadian lawmaker and his family has “no factual basis and is purely baseless” and that Canadian media and politicians have ulterior objectives.
The consulate-general spokeswoman added, “We express strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this,” urging the media and lawmakers to “stop spreading rumours and smearing.”
The consulate said Canadian media and politicians were “intentionally damaging the reputation and image” of the consulate and “maliciously interfering with normal communication and cooperation between both parties.”
On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Canada’s intelligence service concealed Chinese threats against Conservative MP Michael Chong and his family in 2021.
Trudeau said he instructed the agency to report such threats promptly.
