French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna and her Chinese colleague Qin Gang agreed to “develop an economic relationship that is both stronger and more balanced,” according to the Paris foreign ministry.
The meeting followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s April visit to China and weeks after China’s Paris ambassador’s Ukraine statements caused a diplomatic split.
In a statement, Colonna reminded her counterpart “that China had an important role to play in convincing Russia to return to full compliance with the U.N. Charter, in particular the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
In a separate statement, China’s foreign minister Qin Gang said the two nations should explore new areas of cooperation and strengthen the global supply chain.
Qin said China is committed to high-quality growth and high-level opening up and is prepared to cooperate with France and other nations.
Qin suggested the two sides cooperate on international issues, including the Ukraine conflict.
Qin said China is dedicated to pushing a political solution to the situation, communicates with all sides, and will continue to play a constructive role.
