ChatGPT can return to Italy if it satisfies the data watchdog. On Wednesday, Italy’s data protection office issued a list of requirements for OpenAI to satisfy by April 30 to resolve its worries about the ChatGPT chatbot and enable the artificial intelligence service to restart nationwide.
After Garante temporarily prohibited ChatGPT’s data processing and initiated a privacy investigation two weeks ago, Microsoft Corp.-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI put ChatGPT offline in Italy.
Garante issued “concrete” requests Wednesday to be satisfied by the end of the month.
“Only in this case… the authority will suspend the provisional restrictions on the use of Italian users’ data… and ChatGPT will once again become accessible in Italy,” it stated.
OpenAI applauded the agency on Thursday. “We are happy that the Italian Garante is reconsidering their decision and we look forward to working with them to make ChatGPT available to our customers in Italy again soon,” a representative told Reuters.
Italy was the first Western European nation to regulate ChatGPT; its fast growth has drawn scrutiny from politicians and authorities in numerous countries.
Due to its potential influence on national security, jobs, and education, many experts argue AI needs additional restrictions.
OpenAI must notify Italian users of “the methods and logic” underpinning data processing for ChatGPT, according to the authorities.
The watchdog also requested that OpenAI offer methods for data subjects, including non-users, to seek the rectification or deletion of improperly created personal data.
Garante said OpenAI should allow non-users to protest “in a simple and accessible manner” using their data for its algorithms.
It also requested that the corporation implement an age verification system by September to bar those under-13s.
Garante said it would continue examining OpenAI’s data protection violations and reserve the right to take further action.
Other European privacy watchdogs are investigating whether stronger chatbot regulations and coordination are needed after the Italian action on ChatGPT.
Spain’s data protection office has urged the EU’s privacy watchdog to investigate ChatGPT’s privacy issues.
The Italian authority barred AI chatbot firm Replika from using user data in February due to hazards to children and emotionally vulnerable persons.
