British foreign minister anticipates Chinese vice president meeting this week. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is scheduled to see China’s Vice President Han Zheng when key Chinese politicians visit London for King Charles’ coronation later this week.

“I suspect that I will,” Cleverly told BBC Radio.

“And when I do, I will discuss a whole range of things just like when I meet other Chinese officials, including those areas where we have points of criticism.”

Ministers may meet with foreign leaders this week before the May 6 coronation at Westminster Abbey.

After London restricted Chinese investment over national security concerns and expressed concern over Beijing’s military and economic assertiveness, Cleverly and Han would meet at a low point in UK-China relations.

Cleverly stated he would discuss those issues with Han.

“When we engage, it’s about making sure that the Chinese government understand our views on a range of issues, including those where we feel strongly their behaviour is inappropriate, like for example, their failure to abide by the commitments in Hong Kong, or by the treatment of the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang,” he said.

Last week in London, Cleverly urged China to be more transparent about its “tragic miscalculation” military buildup.

He said Britain should engage “robustly and constructively” with China despite “revulsion” about Uyghur treatment in Xinjiang.
