Boosting EV Adoption: County Secures £7.3 Million for Charging Network

The Suffolk County Council has been granted £7.3 million in government funding to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Confirming the allocation, the council revealed that £5.9 million will be utilized for installing on-street charging points throughout the county, with an additional £1.4 million designated for enhancing existing EV infrastructure.

Richard Rout, the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and environment, expressed his enthusiasm about the funding, emphasizing its significance in meeting the growing demand for EVs. This funding forms a part of the broader £185 million allocation to councils through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund.

The Conservative-led council outlined plans to deploy the funding to establish kerbside and car park charging points and community charging hubs to cater to residents lacking off-street facilities. Additionally, residents are encouraged to nominate their streets for consideration of charging points via an online form, aiding in identifying areas with high demand.

While acknowledging that not all roads may be suitable for charging infrastructure, the council aims to address the identified demand. Mr. Rout referenced a council-commissioned report suggesting 2,000 standard chargers and 40 to 60 rapid charging stations in Suffolk by 2030, highlighting the importance of supporting residents, businesses, and visitors in transitioning to EVs.

Beyond the immediate benefits of reducing petrol and diesel usage, Mr. Rout emphasized the broader impacts on air quality and climate change mitigation. Particularly in light of recent extreme weather events, such as storms and flooding, the transition to EVs is vital for fostering healthier lives and reducing environmental impacts.

Despite the focus on promoting EVs, the council remains committed to encouraging alternative modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, and public transport. This holistic approach underscores the council’s dedication to sustainable transportation solutions, prioritizing environmental and public health considerations.
