The German manufacturer BMW Group (BMWG.DE) said on Thursday that it had been granted a test license for level 3 autonomous driving on high-speed highways in Shanghai. This is a step closer to permitting driverless cars in the largest auto market in the world.
According to a statement the company released, BMW intends to introduce vehicles with L3 self-driving technology as soon as they can do so under China’s laws and regulations.
Due to the new license, BMW would be able to conduct experiments with sophisticated autonomous driving technology in Shanghai, which would broaden the regions in which they could do so. In 2018, BMW was granted a license that enabled them to conduct tests on a total of 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) of public roads inside the city.
Policies have been developed in China to hasten the widespread deployment of technology that enables autonomous driving. The Chinese government also released safety rules for using autonomous cars on public transportation earlier in December.
The fact that BMW was able to get a Level 3 autonomous driving test license in Shanghai is evidence that the corporation is committed to being at the forefront of technological advancement. Not only does this accomplishment demonstrate the technological understanding of the company, but it also sets the way for a future in which autonomous cars would redefine industry norms for mobility. A revolutionary change toward mobility solutions that are both safer and more efficient is taking place in the industry due to BMW’s continued leadership in the development of autonomous driving technology.
