On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met again for a second day of talks. The two hostile nations are debating resolving their disputes and preparing for President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated encounter.

On Thursday night, Wang arrived at the State Department late and spoke with Blinken before heading out to dinner. On Friday morning, the two diplomats convened once more, with their top aides seated across from them at a large table, before the media was escorted out of the private gathering.

Later on Friday, Wang is scheduled to meet with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at the White House. Though uncertain how much exchange they will have, he is also anticipated to chat with Biden.

Wang’s three-day visit is the most recent in a string of diplomatic meetings between China and the United States. The trip’s primary goal is to prepare for the anticipated Xi-Biden summit, which is scheduled to take place in November in San Francisco alongside the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. China has not yet revealed Xi’s attendance status.

The tense relationship between the giants has taken on a new aspect due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Washington hopes Beijing may use its clout with Iran to stop escalating into a larger Middle East war.

Wang informed Blinken on Thursday that there are differences between the two nations and that “in-depth” and “comprehensive” communication is necessary to clear up misconceptions and restore relations. Wang stated, via an interpreter, “We should not only resume dialogue, but the dialogue should be thorough and in-depth.”

Preventing a confrontation between the two most significant economies and their strong competitiveness, as well as tensions over trade, Taiwan, human rights, and the South China Sea, has been the Biden administration’s top goal when dealing with Beijing.

Though Xi stated on Wednesday that China was eager to collaborate on global concerns, and Beijing and Washington have discussed searching for areas where they might work together, analysts do not anticipate any quick breakthrough.
