Biden Disputes Sen. Britt’s Tactics: 20-Year-Old Sex Trafficking Story Used to Slam Border Policy

Alabama Republican Senator Katie Britt is facing criticism for using the experiences of a sex trafficking survivor to condemn President Joe Biden and his border policy during her GOP rebuttal to Biden’s State of the Union address. Britt referred to a conversation with a woman she claimed had been sex trafficked by cartels, starting at the age of 12, in an attempt to criticize Biden’s border policies. However, it was later revealed that the victim she referenced, Karla Jacinto Romero, had experienced sex trafficking in Mexico, not the United States, long before Biden became president.

Journalist Jonathan Katz exposed Britt’s misrepresentation of Jacinto Romero’s experience in a TikTok video, highlighting the inaccuracy of linking the survivor’s story to Biden’s border policies. Jacinto Romero has been a public advocate against sex trafficking and has shared her story openly, testifying before the U.S. Congress, the Mexican House of Representatives, and the Vatican.

Britt’s use of the anecdote in her rebuttal faced criticism for presenting it as a private conversation when Jacinto Romero had been vocal about her experiences. Critics argued that Britt’s storytelling contributed to misinformation and the politics of fear.

Despite the backlash, Britt’s spokesperson, Sean Ross, defended the senator’s story, claiming it was “100% correct.” Ross argued that while the specific case mentioned by Britt might be from the past, there are still innocent victims of trafficking by cartels, emphasizing the ongoing issue.

It’s crucial to note that while sex trafficking occurred in the U.S. during the Biden administration, Jacinto Romero’s story is not an example of such trafficking under Biden’s policies. The misrepresentation has fueled criticism of Britt’s storytelling tactics and her attempts to link individual cases to broader political narratives.

In summary, Senator Katie Britt’s use of a sex trafficking survivor’s story in her rebuttal has come under scrutiny for inaccurately tying the victim’s experiences to President Biden’s border policies and for presenting the story as a recent private conversation. Critics argue that the misrepresentation contributes to misinformation and fear-based politics.
