President Joe Biden blasted the murder attempt on his predecessor Donald Trump in a primetime White House address, saying US politics must never be a “killing field”.
A gunman shot presumptive Republican presidential nominee Trump in the ear at a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally. One person died and two were badly injured in the incident.
In his third Oval Office address, Mr. Biden advised Americans to “take a step back” and warn that “political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated”.
Mr. Biden stated, “No matter how strong our convictions, we must never descend into violence,” in comments under seven minutes.

His brief but strong speech went well despite continuous scrutiny after many high-profile language mistakes.
In his primetime address, the president urged Americans to unite and warned that partisan polarization would make November’s election “a time of testing”.
Before the election, Biden and Trump are tied in surveys.
From behind the Resolute Desk, Mr. Biden recounted an increasing number of violent political crimes.
We must not repeat this path. They’ve been there before.” He cited congressional shootings in both parties, the assault on ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, and the 6 January riots.
“We resolve our differences at the ballot box in America,” he remarked. The ballot box. Without bullets.”
Trump was struck in the ear shortly after speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, shocking America.
In footage broadcast worldwide, the 78-year-old was seen with blood streaming from his ear and face, raising a defiant fist as Secret Service operatives hauled him off stage and into a car.
Officials are still probing the attack’s motive. The media reported that Crooks, a Republican, gave $15 to a liberal political committee in 2021.
He was silent and tormented in school, according to classmates. A Pennsylvania firearms club near his home confirmed his membership.
In his speech, Mr. Biden prayed for the family of 50-year-old retired firefighter Corey Comperatore, who was shot and died and two others badly injured at the event. The father-of-two was slain defending his family from gunfire that flew passed Trump and hit audience members.
Biden called Comperatore a “hero” who died “while simply exercising his freedom to support a candidate of his choosing.”.
Trump rally tragedy disrupts the election campaign—for now.
Videos show the shooter shooting Trump despite the public notifying cops.
Trump allies blamed President Biden and his campaign for the attack, claiming the top Democrat had stoked worries about his opponent’s reelection.
“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Though his team has temporarily dropped Trump attack commercials, President Biden did not address those criticisms in his Sunday night address.
Since the attack, the former president has praised his Secret Service detail for their rapid response and urged Americans to “stand united” and “show our true character as Americans.”.
On Sunday night, he landed in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, where he will accept the presidential nomination.
Trump should also name his running mate. The only vice-presidential candidates are Florida Senator Marco Rubio, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and Ohio Senator Vance, according to US media.
In a Sunday news conference, the Secret Service claimed they were satisfied with convention security and had no plans to expand it.
The agency is being questioned over how Crooks got so close to Trump, despite audience members calling him out to cops.
