Belarusian pro-democracy activist and prisoner of conscience Viktaravich Bialiatski works with the Viasna Human Rights Centre. From the early 1980s, Bialiatski has worked for Belarusian independence and democracy, forming Viasna and the Belarusian People Front, which he led from 1996 to 1999. He is a Belarusian opposition Coordinating Council member. The New York Times labeled him “a cornerstone of the human rights movement in Eastern Europe” and a leading Belarusian pro-democracy campaigner.

Bialiatski has received international acclaim for defending Belarusian human rights. The “Alternative Nobel Prize”—the Right Livelihood Award—was his in 2020. In addition, Memorial, Centre for Civil Liberties, and Bialiatski shared the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.

TASS reported Friday that a Belarusian court condemned 2022 Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in jail.
