The project, which is codenamed “Apple Chips in Data Center” internally, is supposed to leverage Apple’s knowledge of chip design for its server architecture.

Reuters reached out to Apple for comment, but the company did not respond. Apple’s stock was up 1% before the bell on Tuesday.

The success of the company’s semiconductors utilized in the iPhone, iPads, and Mac laptops has propelled it to a position of prominence in chip creation.

As per the WSJ report, Apple’s server CPU is said to be more suited for inference model running than training model training, a task now dominated by Nvidia.

In response to mounting criticism about the delayed launch of AI services, Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted at intentions to unveil a slew of new capabilities driven by the technology in the near future.

“We continue to feel very bullish about our opportunity in generative AI and we’re making significant investments,” Cook said in an interview with Reuters.

New iPad models, possibly with a new CPU to speed up AI operations on the devices, could be unveiled during the company’s virtual event on Tuesday.

It is yet unclear when exactly Project ACDC, which has been under development for a number of years, would unveil its new microprocessor, as stated in the WSJ article.

In order to develop and launch production of these chips, Apple has worked closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The report did note, though, that it is unclear whether either company has reached a final decision.
