Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) unveiled its first retail store in India on Wednesday, with numerous people trying to see the establishment’s black and yellow artwork modeled by Mumbai’s renowned cabs.
A source told Reuters the store is still barricaded and may open this month.
In 2020, Cupertino, California-based Apple opened an online store in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
Apple owns 3% of India’s smartphone market due to its expensive costs.
The COVID-19 outbreak delayed Apple’s 2021 store opening plans.
Nonetheless, Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Walmart Inc’s (WMT.N) Flipkart have offered Apple goods in India for years, as have resellers.
Foxconn (2317. TW) and Wistron Corp., Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturers, produce iPhones in India (3231. TW). India would also build iPads and AirPods.
The first retail location is in Reliance Jio World Drive, home to Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and Swarovski.
Apple claimed the brilliantly lighted store was “inspired by the famous Kaali Peeli cab art unique to Mumbai,” alluding to the city’s decades-old yellow and black taxis.
On Wednesday evening, people took photographs and recorded films with the Apple logo in various colors and a “Hey Mumbai” welcome.
