According to local media sources, Apple (AAPL.O) CEO Tim Cook made his first public speech in China in years on Saturday, praising the nation for its rapid innovation and long relations with the U.S. iPhone maker.

Cook is in Beijing for the China Development Forum, a government-organized event that resumed after COVID-19 was lifted late last year.

Cook, key government officials, and Pfizer and BHP Executives are attending.

“Innovation is rising quickly in China and I expect it will further accelerate,” Cook told The Paper.

His visit comes amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington and Apple’s move to new manufacturing hubs like India.

China’s zero-COVID regulations caused worker dissatisfaction at Foxconn’s largest iPhone manufacturing last year, disrupting output.

On Friday, Chinese social media shared photos of Cook visiting an Apple Store in Beijing.

Cook also spoke on education and the need for young people to master programming and critical thinking abilities, stating that Apple will spend 100 million yuan on its rural education initiative, local media said.
