Antalya Cable Car Crash: One Fatality, Ten Injured, Dozens Stranded in Turkey Accident

A tragic incident unfolded in southern Turkey as a cable car cabin collided with a broken pole, leading to the death of one person and injuries to 10 others. The accident occurred on Friday evening near Antalya when the supporting pylon collapsed, causing passengers to plummet to the ground.

In the aftermath of the crash, the entire cable car system was immobile while emergency crews worked tirelessly to evacuate stranded passengers. The justice ministry has initiated an official investigation into the accident.

Despite rescue efforts, a total of 43 passengers remained stranded in the aftermath of the incident, as confirmed by Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency. Throughout Saturday, search and rescue operations persisted at the Tunektepe Cable Car Facility in Antalya’s Konyaaltı district.

The magnitude of the rescue operation was substantial, involving seven helicopters and over 500 rescuers, including specialized mountaineers, as disclosed by the Turkish interior ministry via social media.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Turkey’s Health Minister, Dr. Fahrettin Koca, offered condolences to the victim’s family and expressed wishes for the swift recovery of the injured individuals. The community rallied around those affected, with a collective hope for the speedy rescue of those still stranded.

The cable car, operated by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, serves as a popular tourist attraction, ferrying visitors from Konyaaltı beach to a restaurant and observation platform atop the 618-meter (2027-foot) Tunektepe peak. With 36 cabins accommodating six passengers, the cable car offers a scenic nine-minute journey with panoramic views of Antalya.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in public transportation systems and the necessity of thorough investigations to prevent similar tragedies.
