Angela Chao’s Fatal Tesla Accident: Police Confirm Intoxication in Report

Angela Chao, a prominent shipping tycoon, tragically lost her life last month in a devastating accident at a Texas ranch. The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Chao was intoxicated when she unintentionally reversed her Tesla into a pond on the estate, resulting in her drowning. Her blood alcohol level was found to be nearly three times the legal limit in Texas.

The incident occurred on February 10 after Chao had dinner with a group of friends at the ranch near Johnson City. The 50-year-old had invited seven girlfriends from her Harvard Business School days to spend the weekend at the 900-acre property. They had attended a concert by rapper Pitbull in Austin the previous night, as stated in the police report.

Following dinner at the guest lodge, Chao was maneuvering her Model X SUV back to the main house when the accident transpired. A friend, Amber Keinan, recounted to detectives how Chao had called her, trapped inside the submerged vehicle, expressing her love and bidding farewell moments before the call abruptly ended. Despite frantic efforts by friends and law enforcement to rescue her, Chao could not be saved.

Chao’s toxicology test revealed a significantly high blood alcohol concentration, far exceeding the legal limit in Texas. As the chairwoman and chief executive of the Foremost Group, her family’s shipping business, Chao was a prominent figure in the industry. Alongside her husband, billionaire venture capitalist Jim Breyer, she was part of a wealthy and influential family, with her older sister, Elaine Chao, serving in top government positions under Presidents Trump and Bush.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is married to Elaine Chao, cited the tragic loss of Angela Chao as a factor in his resignation speech. The family, devastated by the untimely death, expressed profound grief over the loss. Angela’s passing left a void that words cannot adequately describe, as stated by her father, Dr. James Chao.

The circumstances surrounding Angela Chao’s death serve as a poignant reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence and the fragility of life, prompting reflection and introspection among those affected by the tragedy.
