According to founder and chairman You Yang, a Singapore-based startup that uses high-performance computing to speed up artificial intelligence computations has raised $4.7 million in venture capital.

HPC-AI Tech, which was founded in August of last year, received funding from former Google China CEO Kai-Fu Lee’s Sinovation Ventures.

According to YOU, the company, which also has a Beijing office, uses cloud-based technology to accelerate central processing units and graphics processing units so that they can keep up with ever-faster AI models. His high-performance computing system (the “HPC” in the name stands for “high performance computing”) accelerates the training and inference of AI models.

“To assist more businesses and individuals in fully utilizing AI, we developed this system so that the user can simply write the code on their laptop and our system will automatically power their AI to deploy AI to cloud or supercomputers,” YOU explain.

“Due to two trends we discovered in AI, we made HPC-AI one of our top priority investment topics in 2021,” says Bob Ren, an executive director at Sinovation Ventures. “The large-scale AI model is the first trend. We noticed in 2020 that large-scale AI models are rapidly developing and approaching application, particularly in NLP and CV. The fourth paradigm of science is AI for Science, which is the second trend.”

“AI models combined with simulations will change our research and development approaches,” Ren adds. “Dr. Yang You is a top-tier HPC-AI scientist with the ability to improve his technology and build a successful company to seize this opportunity.”

You state Geely, a Chinese automaker, is one of HPC-ten AI’s clients. In three years, he wants to reach 1,000 clients, with a 50% annual increase after that. “I believe there will be significant demand in the future,” he predicts. Self-driving cars, he adds, would benefit from his technology the most because their “huge” AI models necessitate high-performance computing.

Grid.ai and Anyscale, both based in the United States, are mentioned as competitors. HPC-AI, he believes, will stand out because of its ability to scale AI training from a single PC to hundreds of machines via cloud or supercomputer.

According to market research firm Gartner, AI software revenue will reach $62.5 billion this year, up 21.3 percent from 2021. According to MarketsandMarkets, the high-performance computing market is expected to grow from $37.8 billion in 2020 to $49.4 billion in 2025.

YOU was inspired by the late Steve Jobs and Tesla CEO Elon Musk when YOU came up with the idea for his artificial intelligence startup. When YOU was a kid in China, his mother ran a clothing store, so he was exposed to business culture.

YOU and his team had already broken two world records for AI speeds before the launch of his company. He and a team claimed the top BERT training speed in 2019, the most recent record, which is a benchmark used by Google and Microsoft, among others, to measure a machine’s understanding of human languages.

Between August 2015 and August 2020, the founder earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering-computer science from U.C. Berkeley, where he also received the Lotfi A. Zadeh Prize for AI-related work. YOU, 30, is a computer science professor at Singapore’s National University.
