On Monday, Boston-based legal firm Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky, and Popeo inaugurated its first international office in Toronto, hiring five Toronto attorneys from competitor firms.
Mintz hired practice leaders Michael Akkawi, Mitch Frazer, and Cheryl Reicin from Toronto-based Torys. Frazer and Reicin oversaw the pensions and employment and life sciences practices, respectively, while Akkawi managed private equity and fund creation.
Capital markets and M&A will be Foster’s priority. In addition, Mintz said Lee Johnson, from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, will advise life sciences clients on patent prosecution.
“Canadian firms and investors are increasingly turning to the U.S. and we are delighted to be connecting into a platform and business network that will benefit our clients,” said Frazer, who will be the managing partner of the Toronto office.
Mintz managing partner Robert Bodian said the company is arranging office space and aims to have 25 attorneys in Canada’s largest metropolis within months.
Mintz also has offices in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. In addition, the company announced a Miami office opening in January. Bodian estimated the Florida office would open by mid-fall.
Foster was congratulated and praised by Dentons Canada. Torys and Wilson Sonsini representatives were unavailable for comment.
