American Apparel has been through the wringer in recent weeks after sexual harassment lawsuits and racy advertising campaigns have put the company in a negative light. However, it has since been striving for change and just announced that a female has been appointed director for the first time in the company’s history.
Colleen B. Brown, previous CEO of Fisher Communications, is taking on the new role with impressive credentials. She led Fisher Communications for eight years, and she directed the sale of the company to Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. for approximately $340 million just last year, according to Business of Fashion.
American Apparel founder Dov Charney was removed from his CEO standing last month following questionable sexual acts.

Following his dismissal and the financial rescue from shareholder Standard General that pulled the company from a monetary downfall, American Apparel lost much of its authoritative control. As a result, its agreement with Standard General gave the hedge fund the right to appoint three new directors, according to Bloomberg News. Brown and Joseph Magnacca, RadioShack’s CEO, were jointly chosen by Standard General and the existing American Apparel board.
“This slate of directors brings significant financial, retail and corporate turnaround expertise to the board,” Standard General partner David Glazek said, according to Los Angeles Times.
As American Apparel fights for a business reversal, one can only hope that Brown will be the fresh perspective that everyone has been looking for.
