Amazon Offers 3D Printing Service

Amazon launched 3D printing service Monday, July 28, that allows buyers to customize and create their own jewelry, bobble head toys and other products from third-party sellers.

“The introduction of our 3D Printed Products store suggests the beginnings of a shift in online retail—that manufacturing can be more nimble to provide an immersive customer experience. Sellers, in alignment with designers and manufacturers, can offer more dynamic inventory for customers to personalize and truly make their own,” Director for Amazon Marketplace Sales Petra Schindler-Carter said.

The giant online retailer has more than 200 3D-printed products available. Some of them provide a “Personalize Now” feature that allows customers to change material, size, styles and color of a product or add text and images to an item.

Customers can view their own design with a 360-degree view before making the purchase. The 3D-printed jewelry items cost $20-$40 while iPhone cases cost around $30.

“The personalization widget empowers customers to make something unique in seconds without knowing how to 3D model,” said Nancy Liang, co-founder for Mixee Labs, a major provider of 3D-printed products on Amazon.

“Customization gives customers the power to remix their world, and we want to change the way people shop online. It also makes the shopping experience more fun, creative and personal,” Liang said.
