Airbus confirmed plane deals with Japan Airlines and Virgin Atlantic at the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, while Qatar Airways hinted at a “sizeable” purchase of wide-body jets by the end of this year or early in 2025.
Delegates anticipate modest deal-making at this year’s showcase aviation industry gathering, with Europe’s Airbus and US rival Boeing having sold out for several years of manufacturing and trying to ramp up output.
Weak results from some airlines have also raised concerns that the post-pandemic travel boom is fading, though jetmakers claim this has had no effect on demand for planes thus far.
Japan Airlines has placed an order for 20 Airbus A350-900 and 11 A321neo jets totaling a little over $3 billion, according to Cirium Ascend’s projected delivery prices.
The airline said in March that it would purchase 21 wide-body A350s and 11 A321neo narrow-body jets, but it is now only acquiring 20 A350s since one would be used to replace a jet destroyed in January in a collision with a Coast Guard aircraft.
