Airbus Aerostructures Partners with Norsk Titanium for Titanium Delivery Agreement
Airbus Aerostructures and Norway’s Norsk Titanium have successfully concluded negotiations for a Master Supply Agreement concerning the delivery of titanium parts, announced the Norwegian metal 3D printing company on Monday.
Notably, titanium, a vital material in aerospace manufacturing, remains unaffected by the restrictions imposed on certain Russian commodities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This exemption allows Airbus to continue sourcing titanium without disruption.
Given the geopolitical situation and the need to diversify its supply chain, Airbus has actively sought alternative titanium sources to reduce its dependence on Russia. Historically, Airbus has relied on Russia for approximately half of its titanium requirements.
Despite calls from some defense companies, including Airbus, to avoid imposing sanctions on Russian titanium, the aerospace giant has been proactively exploring alternative suppliers.
As the largest producer of titanium globally, Russia plays a significant role in the aerospace industry. It provides crucial materials for aircraft engines and landing gear, among other components.
The impending agreement between Airbus Aerostructures and Norsk Titanium, which is responsible for managing and delivering rear fuselages and large structural components to Airbus, will be finalized shortly. While the financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, the collaboration signifies Airbus’s commitment to securing diversified and reliable titanium sources for its manufacturing needs.
