A Russian official claimed on Friday that Oleg Tsaryov, a pro-Russian former legislator whom Moscow allegedly trained to lead a puppet government in Kyiv after Russia’s invasion, is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound.

Vladimir Rogov, the official, withheld the location of the shooting.

“Oleg is in really critical condition. “He is in critical care right now,” stated Rogov, a senior officer stationed in southern Ukraine by Russia. He said on Telegram, “Oleg was shot,” and asked Orthodox Christians to offer prayers for Tsaryov.

According to sources who spoke with Reuters last year, Russia has been preparing Tsaryov to lead a puppet regime in Kyiv following the invasion by Moscow’s soldiers on February 24, 2022.

When the Financial Times reported that possibility before the invasion, citing U.S. intelligence, Tsaryov personally rejected it. At the time, he told the FT that the notion was “pretty funny” because he was “not important enough” to operate a health company in Crimea.

Tsaryov had previously served as a member of the Ukrainian parliament before taking over as speaker of the “Novorossiya” parliament, established in 2014 after rebels supported by Russia in eastern Ukraine declared independence and started battling Ukrainian forces.

The shooting of a pro-Russian Ukrainian politician reflects the broader geopolitical dynamics in the region. Ukraine’s relationship with Russia and its internal political divisions are critical factors in shaping the country’s political landscape and international standing.

The shooting and injury of a pro-Russian Ukrainian politician represent a concerning development within Ukraine’s political landscape. It serves as a reminder of the country’s ongoing political tensions and divisions, which can have ramifications beyond its borders. As more details emerge, the incident will likely attract significant attention from both regional and international stakeholders.
