- 15% of the global workforce faced bullying in the last three years and didn’t take the step to report it to the company
- 4% of the bullying population faced sexual harassment in the last three years
- An impressive 33% is responding positively and ready to challenge such a condition.
A large percentage of the global employees do have the feeling that the issue related to workplace bullying in the last couple of years is getting no attention from the employers. What we are claiming here is based on the report shared by none other than the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Why Bullying at the workplace not getting reported?
We are surprised to get the info that around 15% of the workforce faced bullying in the last three years’ time, and not even half of them got reported to the company. When questioned too many employees what’s the reason behind not reporting such event, the surprising answer which maximum of them gave is fear, which is restricting them and reporting such things will make them singled out in the crowd. CIPD keeping this context in mind, requested firms to give specialized training to managers on how to handle such types of conflicts or issues better.
The report given by CIPD, on the HR professionals, was designed based on two online surveys, which were done by the polling organization named YouGov. One study was done taking into account the views of 2,000 +workers, while the other one was done based on the views of HR professionals as well as decision-makers.
Well, CIPD also did an online focus group formed with workers having experience of bullying and harassment.
Few of them said they badly suffered due to stress, insomnia, anxiety, heart palpitations as well as suicidal thoughts. One candidate of the online focus group said: “I had to have anti-depressants and counseling”. “I still can’t go to the town where I worked because of panic attacks.”
What’s the typical format of Bullying in the workplace?
The prevalent form of bullying or harassment that we can see in many corporate companies is making one feel undermined or even humiliated being in my job. This is something reported by 55% of women and a whopping 50% of men who faced bullying in their workplace. The figure is very alarming. The next in line after humiliation is persistent unwarranted criticism and also unwanted personal remarks. You will be surprised to know the fact that around 4% of the bullying population reported sexual harassment in the last three years’ time, and this is a stubborn problem. But it is great to share that positive change noticed in the condition in the previous two years’ time, and employees are showing willingness towards standing up against sexual harassment. An impressive 33% is showing confidence in challenging such a condition.
Few managers who participated in the survey that in maximum cases, employees didn’t wish to report such things as they feel that their concern may be presented as overacting. But managers also need to understand the fact that such issues in many cases can be best resolved informally, especially in the case when the behavior is unintentional.
