Winery Vandalism: Intruder Wastes €2.5 Million Worth of Wine in 60,000-Liter Mishap
A Spanish winery, Cepa 21, has incurred losses exceeding €2.5 million (£2.1 million) after an unidentified intruder emptied 60,000 liters of wine from two of its premium varieties, Horcajo and Malabrigo. The incident occurred around 03:30 local time on Sunday, with the perpetrator likely having familiarity with the winery grounds. Security footage captured a hooded individual skillfully navigating between tanks and swiftly opening them, causing the wine to spill.
According to a Cepa 21 representative, opening the tanks, which include security mechanisms, requires specific knowledge, suggesting that the intruder is accustomed to such equipment. The person moved adeptly across the winery grounds, indicating familiarity with the premises even in the dark.
While police investigate the case, it is too early to speculate on the intruder’s identity, and there are no immediate suspicions regarding current or former employees. The intruder opened five tanks, but only three contained wine.
Cepa 21, located in Castrillo de Duero in north-western Spain, faces significant financial losses due to the deliberate wine spill. The affected varieties, Horcajo and Malabrigo, are valued at £80 and £35 per bottle in the UK, respectively. The winery representative emphasized the challenge of opening the tanks and expressed concern about the intruder’s familiarity with the machinery.
