It’s only a matter of time until the Norwegian Air Shuttle begins offering discounts on trans-Atlantic flights. The Norwegian Air Shuttle was recently approved by the US Transportation Department in their request to use an Irish secondary in order to increase U.S. flights.
Spokesman Anders Lindstorm says that the new move will certainly lead to an increase in flights and the addition of new jobs. The Department of Transportation also found Norwegian Air International to be a good fit for U.S. carriers. However, some lawmakers and even unions rejected the idea.
While Norwegian Air says that the Irish unit will attract an entirely different mark, others, including democratic representative, Peter DeFazio, believe that this new move by Norwegian Air will have a negative impact on jobs here in the U.S. DeFazio stated that he is “extremely disappointed by DOT’s short-sighted decision to ignore the serious harm to thousands of American jobs, and our national security.”
The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) believed that the government had gone against its workers. They called on President Barack Obama to reverse the decision that had been made by Norwegian Air. The AFA’s main argument was that the decision goes against legal protection for airline workers. The Air Line Pilots Association said that this would result in the casualty of many U.S. jobs.
Costs for trans-Atlantic flight have dropped by nine percent this year due to Middle Eastern and other carriers offering better seat options. Norwegian Air has to only account for the recent spike in U.S. to Europe flights, but they must look at things like terrorist attacks in Europe that will likely hinder the profits of certain carriers
